27. William K. Rashbaum

Designation Senior Writer Author Bio I’m a senior writer for The New York Times, covering municipal and political corruption, the courts and broader law enforcement topics in New York. I write investigative stories and news articles. I’m interested in how government can breed corruption — in politics, in city and state agencies, and in fields as varied as construction, banking and the art market. I’m also intrigued by how corruption schemes have in some ways changed and in some ways stayed the same through New York history. I have written extensively about some of the state’s elected officials in Al...bany and New York City, including Mayor Eric Adams and his predecessor, Bill de Blasio, and the federal investigations into their campaign fund-raising. And for nearly six years, I’ve focused in some measure on Donald J. Trump, including his criminal and civil cases in New York and some of the people around him. I have worked as a reporter in New York for four decades, mostly covering crime. I joined The Times in 1999 and have covered the N.Y.P.D., federal law enforcement, terrorism, police corruption and organized crime. Before coming to The Times, I worked at the Hearst Newspapers, U.P.I., Reuters, New York Newsday and The New York Daily News. I was part of a team of Times reporters that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for its reporting on the involvement of New York’s then governor, Eliot Spitzer, with prostitutes. I have written about other New York governors: Andrew M. Cuomo, who in 2014 abruptly shuttered an anti-corruption commission he created, and nearly a decade later resigned in disgrace amid a sex scandal; and David Paterson, who protected an aide who had harassed his girlfriend, and then abandoned his 2010 gubernatorial campaign. Born and raised in New York City, I attended the New England Conservatory of Music and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College.more

Beginning in 1981, Mr. Cowell was based in Nairobi, Kenya; Johannesburg; Athens; Cairo; Rome; Bonn and Berlin; London; and Paris. His coverage of South Africa during the tumultuous 1980s won a George Polk Award, but prompted the apartheid authorities to expel him in early 1987. As digital platforms assumed ever greater importance, Mr. Cowell focused on breaking news for NYTimes.com, but also wrote a regular prin...t column, “Letter from Europe,” for international readers. Mr. Cowell is the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction, including “The Terminal Spy” (2008), an authoritative account of the life and death of Alexander V. Litvinenko, a former Soviet KGB officer poisoned in London in 2006 with a rare radioactive isotope. His first two novels, “A Walking Guide” (2003) and “The Paris Correspondent” (2011), chronicled the travails of a fictitious foreign correspondent, Joe Shelby. In 2016 he published his third novel, “Permanent Removal,” set in post-apartheid South Africa. A new novel, “Cat Flap,” is to be published in New York in 2018. Before he joined The Times, Cowell worked for the Swiss Broadcasting Service in Bern, Switzerland, and for the Reuters news agency in Germany, Britain, Turkey, Lebanon, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Designation Senior International Correspondent Author Bio Alissa Johannsen Rubin is an international correspondent and senior writer for The New York Times, covering climate change and conflict in the Middle East. She joined The Times in January 2007 as a correspondent in Baghdad and covered Iraq and Afghanistan, becoming bureau chief in Baghdad in the fall of 2008. She then moved to Afghanistan in October 2009, becoming bureau chief there a couple of months later. She was in Kabul, Afghanistan, for almost four years, leaving in the late summer of 2013 to become Paris bureau chief. She continued, though, to work on projects in Afghanistan and joined... the team covering the Islamic State’s takeover of northern and western Iraq in 2014. That August, she was seriously injured and nearly killed in a helicopter crash in Kurdistan, covering the beleaguered Yazidis. Before joining The Times, she was The Los Angeles Times co-bureau chief in Baghdad, and its bureau chief for the Balkans for five years. She started at that newspaper's Washington bureau in 1997, covering health care policy and financing, abortion politics and legislation, and the fight over tobacco legislation on Capitol Hill. Before that, she was a reporter for Congressional Quarterly magazine, where she covered health care and then taxes and trade on Capitol Hill. She came to Washington after working for four years as a reporter in Wichita, Kan., for the Knight-Ridder newspaper then known as The Wichita Eagle-Beacon. She covered taxes there as well as the troubled farm economy. Her career in journalism started at The American Lawyer magazine where she was a researcher. In Washington, she freelanced for The New Republic, The Washington Monthly and The Washington Post’s Outlook section as well as The Washington Post Magazine. Ms. Rubin was born and grew up in New York City and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1980 from Brown University with an honors degree in Renaissance studies and a minor in classics (Latin). She received a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities to pursue her graduate studies in modern European history, with a focus on the history of the Catholic Church, at Columbia University, where she received an M.A. in 1986. She won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting; the 2015 John Chancellor Award for journalistic achievement; a 2010 Overseas Press Association award for a piece on women suicide bombers, “How Baida Wanted to Die;” and a 1992 Washington Monthly award for a piece that appeared in the Washington City Paper, “What People Talk About When They Talk About Abortion.” In 1992 she won an Alicia Patterson Fellowship to report on the medical and religious roots of the abortion controversy in the wake of the United States Supreme Court’s 1989 Webster decision. She was twice part of teams that won the National Farm Writers of America Award at The Wichita Eagle-Beacon in 1986 and 1988 for their coverage of farm issues. She also won the William Allen White Award in 1989 for her coverage of Kansas’s overhaul of its real estate taxes. Her college thesis, which was a translation and annotation of some of the letters of Lionardo Bruni, a Renaissance humanist, was published in Allegorica, an academic journal. Ms. Rubin lives in Paris with her husband, James E. Castello, a lawyer who specializes in international arbitration.more
